Canada announces new program to receive 90.000 new Permanent Residents

IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) has announced today six new and temporary immigration streams for international graduates, essential workers and French speakers. 

As of May 6, IRCC will begin accepting applications under these new streams. The streams will remain open until November 5, 2021, or until the intake cap of each stream is reached.

Please find below a summary of each stream:


INTERNATIONAL GRADUATES

Cap of 40,000 applications

Requirements:

  • - completed one of the following eligible Canadian post-secondary programs no earlier than January 2017:
    • • a degree (Associate, Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctorate) which must be a degree issued on completion of a program of at least 8 months in duration; or
    • • a degree, diploma, certificate, or attestation issued on completion of a program of any duration leading to an occupation in a skilled trade (listed in Annex A here); or
    • • one or more diploma/certificate/attestation where the following conditions are met:
  • For diplomas/certificates/attestations, each program of study must be at least 8 months in duration and the combined length of the credential(s) must be equivalent to a two-year credential (at least 16 months in duration).
  • proven proficiency in one of Canada’s official languages (i.e. at least CLB 5);
  • meet general admissibility requirements (e.g. not being criminally or medically inadmissible to Canada);
  • be residing in Canada, authorized to work and working at the time of application (i.e. submission of permanent residence application to Canada); and
  • intend to reside in a province or territory other than Quebec.

TEMPORARY WORKERS

Cap of 20,000 applications for temporary workers in health-related occupations; and

Cap of 30,000 applications for temporary workers in other eligible essential occupations


Requirements:

  • accumulated at least one year of work experience in Canada in an essential occupation (list of essential occupations available here) within the last three years;
  • proven proficiency in one of Canada’s official languages (i.e. at least CLB 4);
  • meet general admissibility requirements (e.g. not being criminally or medically inadmissible to Canada);
  • be residing in Canada, authorized to work and working at the time of application (i.e. submission of permanent residence application to Canada); and
  • intend to reside in a province or territory other than Quebec.

So far, there is no available information regarding the expected average processing time for these categories of PR application. However, it may be similar to current provincial nominee class applications that take around 15–19 months of processing.
